Police are on the scene of a shooting with a male struck by gunfire in Newark’s South Ward at this time.
Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 40’s block of Weequahic Avenue around 10:30 a.m.
Units arrived and found the victim suffering bullet wounds.
EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital for treatment while officers detained a potential suspect blocks away.
Police have the area shut down for the investigation. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified.
UPDATE: The victim was pronounced dead at 11:14 a.m.
