NJ State Police officials were notified of a shooting at an interstate entrance in Newark's South Ward on Monday morning.
Newark Police units responded to reports of shots fired near 452 Lyons Avenue shortly before 4 a.m.
Officers arrived and found shell casings on the entrance ramp of I-78, but a search for victims on or around the highway returned negative.
Police say a ShotSpotter alerted them of the shooting, and the suspect fled the scene.
The motive for the encounter is under investigation.
