A 39-year-old Newark woman pleaded guilty to child endangerment charges in connection to the death of a four-year-old girl she left unattended along with three other children.
On May 7, 2014, Sykita L. Covington left Naira Bennett, two-year-old and two of her own children – ages 1 and 3 – inside an apartment at the Bradley Court housing complex.
After Convington left, Naira became trapped inside a futon, according to police.
Naira was pronounced dead at University Hospital at approximately 7 p.m., after a neighbor found Naira and called police around 10:45 a.m.
According to officials, Covington said she left the four children alone because she had to pick up one of her sons from school.
Her sentencing is scheduled for June 12 before Superior Court Judge Carolyn Wright.
Covington remains in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility in lieu of $75,000 bail.
