Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said on Friday, June 9, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit arrested a 14-year-old Jersey City male in connection with the fatal shooting of Tyshawn Smith.
Prosecutor Suarez said the 14-year-old is charged as a juvenile with Aggravated Manslaughter in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11:4a(1), Possession of a Weapon in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1).
He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus.
According to Prosecutor Suarez, at approximately 4:20 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 124 Wilkinson Avenue.
Responding officers located an injured male – later identified as Tyshawn Smith, 15, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at approximately 4:55 a.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the Cause of Death to be a Gunshot Wound to the Abdomen and the Manner to be Homicide.
Prosecutor Suarez said Juvenile matters are confidential and no additional information can be released at this time.
