Newark and the surrounding North Jersey region will experience a much-needed respite from the hazardous air quality that has plagued the area for the past week due to raging wildfires in Canada.
The hazardous conditions forced state office buildings to close early and shut down two of NJ's largest school districts -Newark and Elizabeth- on Thursday.
According to The National Weather Service, as of 4:45 a.m. today, the latest air quality numbers indicated a significant improvement, with a reading of 75 in Newark.
This improvement comes as a relief to residents who have been enduring the effects of the smoke-filled air.
Despite the continuing wildfires in Canada, the air quality is expected to continue improving into the weekend, but we are not entirely out of potential danger.
This positive change results from several factors, including weather conditions and localized efforts to mitigate the impact of wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service, the humidity is at a moderate level of 63% today. The wind is blowing from the northwest at a speed of 8 mph, helping to disperse the haze and improve air circulation.
The barometer reads 29.72, indicating stable atmospheric pressure.
NWS meteorologists say while there is a 20 percent chance of showers, the overall weather forecast for the day suggests mostly cloudy conditions. The low temperature for tonight is expected to be around 55 degrees, a high of 73, and the wind will be calm.
The widespread haze that has affected visibility in the region is gradually dissipating, allowing for clearer skies. This positive development bodes well for outdoor activities, including sports, recreational pursuits, and enjoying fresh air.
As the week progresses, residents of Newark and the North Jersey region can look forward to continued improvement in air quality. While the Canadian wildfires are still burning, the combination of favorable weather conditions and ongoing efforts to combat the blaze is expected to contribute to a healthier environment.
