The National Weather Service said Newark and northern New Jersey residents should brace themselves for scorching temperatures today, as an air quality alert has been issued from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT.
With the mercury rising and humidity levels reaching 78%, NWS forecasters say it is essential to take precautions to stay safe and cool.
The National Weather Service also warns of a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 PM, so keep an eye on the skies for any developing weather conditions.
The day will start with increasing clouds and a high temperature near 90 degrees.
Although the wind speed is currently calm, it is expected to shift and become eastward at 5 to 8 mph during the morning hours.
This change in wind direction may relieve scorching heat, but it is still crucial to take necessary measures to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
The air quality alert also highlights the potential for reduced air quality due to high ozone levels.
Those with respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies should be particularly cautious and follow their doctor's recommendations. It is advisable to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible to minimize exposure to pollutants.
