Police in Newark are investigating a pedestrian strike that left a man dead on a busy roadway Sunday morning.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of Springfield Avenue and South 14th Street after learning of a person struck by a vehicle around 2:30 a.m.
Police and EMS arrived and found the horrific scene with a man lying on the ground suffering severe injuries to both his legs. Witnesses said it appeared that the man was trying to cross the road when a car struck him and amputated a portion of both legs.
He was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
The Essex County Proseuctor's Office was notified of the fatality. An active and ongoing investigation is underway to determine what caused the collision.
At least two other people were struck by the car but no severe injuries were immediately reported.
