Jersey City Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Federal Prison for Repeated Drug Possession, Weapons Charges

Federal authorities announced that a Hudson County man was sentenced today to 240 months in prison for possessing a loaded firearm and possessing with intent to distribute controlled substances on three different occasions.

According to officials, Clarence Gaffney, 36, of Jersey City, was convicted on Oct. 26, 2022, following a three-day trial in Newark federal court on three counts of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and one count of possession of firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon.

Police reported finding drugs in Gaffney's underwear and shoe following an October 2019 traffic stop.

According to federal authorities, Gaffney was arrested again on December 2019 after officers caught him selling drugs on Martin Luther King Drive.

For each arrest, a judge ordered Gaffney's release under New Jersey's 2017 bail reform law.
