Police took a suspect into custody and charged him with possessing an unlawful firearm in Newark's Noth ward Tuesday night.
According to preliminary reports, an off-duty law enforcement officer requested backup after an unidentified male pointed a weapon at the cop near Montclair Avenue and Beaumont.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene and was captured by police on Clifton Avenue.
The suspect or the officer exchanged no gunfire.
The incident is under investigation.
