The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the investigation into a shooting incident that left a male dead on a road in Belleville on the Newark border Wednesday morning.
Police were dispatched to the McCarter Highway service road between Mill Street and Verona Avenue to investigate reports of a person shot.
Upon arrival, officers found the unconscious and unresponsive male suffering bullet wounds.
The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police closed the area off while they focused their attention on a truck parked at the scene, where they launched an active and ongoing investigation.
No other severe injuries were reported.
Police have not announced an arrest.
