The Essex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating a violent crash that killed a male driver and a female occupant of the other vehicle Sunday morning in Newark.
Officials said at approximately 2:38 a.m., Newark police were notified of a two-car crash on U.S. Route 1 & 9 North in Newark, near mile marker 49.6.
Police believe that one of the car's male driver heading southbound on 1&9, crossed over and slammed into a vehicle heading in the other direction occupied by two women.
The female passenger in the vehicle died at the scene, while the driver was taken to University Hospital and is in critical condition.
The driver of the second car died at the scene.
Newark Fire Department also responded to the scene after both vehicles burst into flames on impact.
CSIB was called in to lead the investigation.
