A local business owner, several Newark Police officers, and firefighters unsuccessfully administered CPR on two unconscious men found near the Route 1&9 bridge earlier today.
Shortly before 10:15 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to 18 Stockton Street after receiving reports of sick and injured individuals.
Upon arrival, police took over CPR from an employee of a nearby business who was providing life-saving efforts on Hispanic males found lying on the ground across the street from his business.
Firefighters arrived shortly after and continued chest compression on the men, who were ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
Local business owners told RLS Media that the area near and underneath the Route 1&9 bridge is a known hangout for homeless individuals and those who want to abuse drugs.
No suspicious or foul play was suspected.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was not involved in the investigation.
