Local and county officers took a suspect in custody after a crash led to the discovery of multiple weapons inside a vehicle in east Orange Tuesday.
According to the Essex County Sheriff's Office, at approximately 10:11 pm, officers arrested Mr. Basir North, 20, of Orange, who officials said possessed a stolen vehicle and weapons, for resisting arrest by flight, unlawful possession of a handgun, and receiving stolen property among other charges.
According to county authorities, while stopped at a red light at the intersection of Central Avenue and South Harrison Street in East Orange, an Essex County Sheriff's Officer observed a vehicle matching the description of a stolen vehicle crash into another car on South Harrison Street.
OOfficialssay, the driver, exited the vehicle and fled north on South Harrison Street.
Police took North into custody with the help of additional Sheriff's Officers and the East Orange Police.
He was transported to University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura said, "I am proud of the work performed by these fine officers.
Their quick thinking and actions helped to locate a stolen vehicle and remove a dangerous person and weapons from the area."
