Elizabeth

By; Richard  L. Smith

An Elizabeth Police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries when the driver of a stolen vehicle rammed a police cruiser after officers engaged in a vehicle stop this evening in Elizabeth.

According to a preliminary investigation, police tried to stop a car reportedly stolen out of Essex County and wanted for felonies when the driver backed into a police cruiser near Route 1&9 and Maple Avenue around 9:07 p.m.

During the incident, one police officer fired at least two rounds from his service weapon at the suspect, who sped northbound on Route 1&9 into The City of Newark.

The driver led cops on a high-speed pursuit that reached speeds over 80mph, which resulted in Elizabeth officers losing the vehicle on Frelinghuysen Avenue near the entrance to Route 22.

The investigation is active and the suspects remain at large.
