Police in Newark are investigating the motive behind a shooting that injured a male in Newark's North Ward Monday.
A ShotSpotter device activated in the 300 block of North 7th Street detected about a half dozen rounds of gunfire.
At approximately 3:35 a.m., police officers at University Hospital noticed a male victim enter the emergency department suffering bullet wounds.
Authorities learned that the victim was shot on North 7th Street and was transported to the medical center by private vehicle. Detectives held that car for the investigation.
Officials sent several units to the neighborhood, where they found multiple shell casings near 345 North 7th Street, but no other victims were located.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office confirmed the victim's death Monday morning.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
