Multi-Vehicle Crash Caused by Loose Tire Kills Bergen County Man in Denville

An Englewood Cliffs man is dead and his wife injured after a loose tire struck their car causing a multi-vehicle crash on Route 80 in Denville last night.

The Englewood Cliffs couple, in an Audi, were traveling west on Route 80 near mile-marker 37 shortly before 7:30 p.m. when a tire flew over median striking their vehicle, state police said.

The driver of the Audi lost control of the vehicle striking a Ford F-350, driven by Jason Wesling, 23, of Andover,  who did not suffer any injuries, according to police.

The Audi than continued and struck a Mercedes Benz, driven by Leonard Wesling, 51, of Andover, who also was not injured, as he struck the guardrail.

Initial investigations revealed the tire came off the rear axle of a vehicle driven by Eric Svensson, 23, of Lake Hopatcong, police said. 

Svensson and a passenger were not injured, according to police.

The driver of the Audi, 77-year-old Sheldon Lefkowitz, was pronounce dead at the scene shortly before 8 p.m. His wife, 66-year-old Randi Lefkowitz, was transported to Morristown Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. 

The crash remains under investigation, no charges have been filed at this time, added police.
