In a valiant effort to unify residents to engage in dialogue to eradicate violent crimes, including shootings in The City of Newark, The Honorable Mayor Ras J. Baraka was joined by entertainment legend Queen Latifah, R&B artist Faith Evans and dozen of Newark artists, local sports icons, educators, and residents in a successful Annual #24HrsOfPeace.
The concert-like event, which included on-stage semi-circle discussions by residents who conversed on ways to end the cycle of violent criminal episodes around the city, was held on Friday, September 2, from 6 p.m. to Saturday, September 3, to 6 p.m., in the heart of Newark's Central Ward; Springfield Avenue, between Bergen and Blum Streets.
The annual event, that advocated a violence-free community – or "time-out" – for 24 hours to promote community-building, sent an excruciating week-long series of shots fired gunplay that loomed over the city for the week beginning August 23 to September 2 to a screeching halt.
During the brief crime spell, there were about 17 shootings in which nine people were injured and three fatalities in the eight days.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the three homicide incidents. At the same time, hard-working Newark Police violent crimes detectives/officers spent the week successfully rounding up as many as seven suspects who they believe are responsible for the criminal unrest that had residents pleading for an end.
The end was evident as Newark Police officials reported only 1 shots-fired incident in Newark during the 24-hours of peace community engagement and entertainment session.

According to city officials, the annual event advocated a violence-free community by creating a "time-out" for 24 hours, promoting community-building for parents, children, artists, business owners, faith and community-based organizations.
Queen Latifah hosted the event, including performances by Faith Evans, Fabolous and CL Smooth, the co-founder of 24 Hours of Peace, Hakim Green, and local talent.
Saturday's lineup included Rowdy Rebel, Fivio Foreign, G Herbo, and 2Rare.
