UPDATE: Newark South Ward Shooting Leaves One Dead, Two Others Seriously Injured

Newark

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is leading the investigation into a violent shooting incident that claimed a man's life and seriously injured two others in Newark's South Ward Tuesday.

The early morning encounter happened around 12:50 a.m. in the 20's block of Mitchell Place.

According to a preliminary investigation, shooters arrived in the area and fired over a dozen rounds at the victims before speeding away from the scene in a vehicle.

Police were alerted of the shooting by a ShotSpotter device. When they arrived at the scene, officers marked off several shell casings and located blood evidence, but no victims were there.

Authorities say the victims self-transported to Beth Israel Hospital for treatment. One of the victims was pronounced dead.

Officials have not released a motive for the active and ongoing investigation at this time.

NOTE: Elizabeth Police found a torched vehicle just at the border. This is believed to be the vehicle the suspects occupied during the deadly shooting.

Tuesday morning’s shooting capped off a violent seven days with several individuals being shot and continued shots fired incidents that have gripped The City of Newark.
