Essex County authorities were notified of a shooting that severely injured a woman in Newark's South Ward Sunday.
The early morning incident happened around 12:20 a.m. in the 60's block of Voorhees Street.
Police responded to reports of shots fired in the community and when officers arrived, they found an unconscious and unresponsive woman suffering a bullet wound in her neck.
The woman was rushed to University Hospital for treatment for the life-threatening wound.
Officials have not announced a motive for the shooting, and no suspects have been identified.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has not confirmed a fatal shooting and referred questions to Newark Police.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
