Prosecutor: Autopsy Results Reveal Retired Irvington Firefighter Was Suffocated

Authorities today announced that a retired firefighter from Irvington who was found dead last week at his home was suffocated to death.

Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter said that the death of 88-year-old Donald Dreher was immediately deemed a homicide but today autopsy results revealed the cause of death.

Police responded to Dreher’s 18th Avenue home for a welfare check sometime around 11:22 a.m. Friday, when police discovered his body.

Investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

The Essex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers Program is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest.
