Police in Plainfield are investigating a fire that resulted in fatal injuries for at least one person overnight.
A preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 1:22 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 825 North Avenue to investigate reports of a fire with trapped children inside a home.
Upon arrival, crews found smoke and flames coming from an 'oddly shaped' two/three-story vinyl siding-faced home.
Firefighters stretched several lines to extinguish visible fire coming from the building.
Once inside, firefighters found trapped occupants and began to rush them outside to awaiting EMS units.
Officials confirmed at least one fatality of an unidentified person, but about two others were transported to an ara hospital.
The fire was placed under control in about an hour, with the cause under investigation.
The State Division of Fire Safety, Union County Prosecutor's Office and the Arson squad were called to the scene to assist in the investigation.
