UPDATE 6:35 p.m. This is now a homicide investigation.
EMS units are rushing to the scene for a male victim found suffering gunshot wounds at a location in Newark’s West Ward.
It happened near the intersection of Springfield Avenue and South 20th Street just before 6:10 p.m.
Police responded to a ShotSpotter device that detected about nine rounds of gunfire and when they arrived, officers found the victim face down suffering bullet wounds in his head.
Officers quickly taped off the area and requested other officers for crowd control while detectives searched the area for additional victims.
The suspect ran from the scene and remained at large.
No other injuries were reported.
