UPDATE: Man Injured After Jumping from Bloomfield Avenue Bridge, Landing in Branch Brook Park

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department were on the scene of a jumper-down situation after a man leaped from a bridge in Newark’s North Ward on Monday night.  

It happened around 11:17 p.m. on Bloomfield Avenue between 3rd and Lake streets. 

Emergency responders were dispatched to the area after receiving reports that a man was threatening to jump from the bridge. 

According to preliminary reports, police arrived and found the seriously injured victim bleeding from his head after jumping from the bridge and landing on Branch Brook Park Drive inside the park.  

Police believe that the emotionally distraught male was struck by a vehicle after falling in the roadway. 

Authorities have not confirmed if the driver stayed at the scene. 

The conscious but unalert man was transported to the hospital for treatment, and The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said they could not confirm a fatality. 

The incident remains under investigation by The Essex County Sheriff’s Office who are responsible for securing the park. 

Newark Police officials referred questions regarding the incident to the Essex County Sherrif’s Office.
