Essex County authorities are investigating a deadly shooting in Newark's Central Ward earlier today.
Residents at a housing complex said they heard several loud popping noises near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Livingston Street before 12:45 p.m. and then dialed 911.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a severely injured male near the Kipp Newark Thrive Academy Charter School suffering bullet wounds.
The unidentified male was pronounced dead a short time later.
Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office were on the scene leading the investigation.
Officials have not confirmed if today's homicide is connected to a violent shooting episode at the nearby Pilgrim Village Housing Development last week.
No arrests have been made.
