Police took a suspect into custody and recovered weapons after officers broke up a large gathering in Newark's West Ward on Monday night.
Stepped-up police enforcement and positive officer community engagement, observed in every section of the city, is credited with one of the city's best Memorial Day Holidays and a significant drop in serious crime during this time of year.
In this incident, at approximately 11:35 p.m., police responded to reports of a large crowd and shots fired in the area of Sanford Avenue and Helen Place.
When officers arrived, they requested additional units to the scene after noticing a crowd of over 300 people stretching several blocks.
Officers located several shell casings near 590 Sanford Avenue and attempted to question a suspect when a foot pursuit was initiated.
Police captured the suspects and confiscated two guns without further incident.
The suspect was charged with possession of a weapon and no injuries were reported.
