Essex County authorities are looking into an armed robbery that was reported near the border of East Orange and Newark Friday morning.
According to a preliminary investigation, an off-duty law enforcement officer, reportedly from the sheriff's department, notified police when four armed suspects approached his vehicle on 14th Street and Hedden Place around 2 a.m.
Reports say the suspects smashed the front driver's side window, took the victim's wallet, and then fled the scene in a gray Dodge Durango SUV.
The officer did not suffer severe injuries during the incident and the 3-4 suspects remained at large.
It is not clear if the officer had a service weapon at this time.
