Police reported severe injuries for at least one person involved in a crash on a highway in Union County on Wednesday.
According to a statement released by Linden Police, at approximately 1:30 a.m. Linden Police Officers responded to the 500 block of E. Edgar Road on reports of a motor vehicle crash.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicates that a Volkswagen GTI was traveling south on Route 1 when it struck the rear of a tractor-trailer as it entered the roadway.
Police said the Volkswagen rolled over onto its side due to the crash, and members of the Linden Fire Department extracted the driver.
The driver, a 45-year-old man from Springfield, was taken to Newark University Hospital with serious injuries; he is currently listed in critical but stable condition.
Linden Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
E. Edgar Road was closed following the crash. It was reopened at approximately 6:00 a.m. today.
