Firefighters battled a late-night fire that destroyed an apartment building in Newark Monday.
Officials say crews were dispatched to 9 Thomas Street to investigate reports of a fire inside the multi-family building shortly before 11:20 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters located heavy flames on the first floor of the structures that began to extend to the upper levels rapidly.
Officials on the scene struck a second alarm after firefighters noticed flames made its way to the cockloft then through the roof of the building.
After several hours of extinguishing stubborn fire lingering inside the building, firefighters controlled the blaze around 2 a.m. with firefighters rescuing trapped unauthorized occupants.
No serious injuries were reported, and the fire's cause is under investigation.
