UPDATE: Cars, High School Struck by Bullets in Newark West Ward Rolling and Moving Gun Battle

Police in Newark are investigating a violent shooting episode that had armed suspects exchange multiple rounds of bullets, causing property damage in the city's West Ward Wednesday. 

The broad daylight encounter happened around 2:52 p.m. when police received a ShotSpotter alert reporting gunfire in the vicinity of Central Avenue and South 12th Street.

A preliminary investigation indicated that police arrived and found shell casings in about three locations. 

Police believe suspects involved in the wild shootout made their way eastbound on Central Avenue from South 13th Street, where suspects blasted rounds of bullets at each other near the Fairmount Cemetary. 

Police confirmed that a stray bullet ripped through the window of a two-story building occupied by a kidney dialysis treatment center on the bottom floor-  and the Lead Charter School located at 571 Central Avenue. 

No one inside was injured, police confirmed.

It appears that suspects continued to make their way southbound on 12th Street, where they traded more than two dozen rounds near the intersection of 11th Avenue. 

Police arrived at the scene and found several vehicles struck by bullets, but no injuries were immediately reported after canvassing the area and checking local hospitals.

Authorities reported that police found a gun near 192 South 12th Street. The suspect fled the scene on foot after a brief foot pursuit. 

The shooting remains under investigation.
