Police in Newaek are reporting the arrest of Mr. Zykee Gregory, 19, and Ms. Janae Baker, 18, both of Newark, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred yesterday.
Police say at approximately 12:15 a.m., a woman was approached by a man and woman who exited a black SUV and demanded her personal property at gunpoint.
Police say suspects stole the victim’s purse and cell phone, which was active in Orange, East Orange, and in Newark. Police observed a man and woman fitting the description of the suspects in the 200 block of Peshine Avenue.
The suspects were found in possession of a handgun, the victim’s purse, and an empty wallet.
Both Gregory and Baker were arrested without incident.
Each suspect faces charges of robbery, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
These charges are merely accusations.
The suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Detectives are continuing to investigate whether Gregory and Baker were involved in two other robberies that occurred in Newark Saturday night.
The first incident occurred at 10 p.m. in the 600 block of Summer Avenue. A male victim was robbed at gunpoint after being followed by three males who stole his wallet and cell phone.
A second robbery occurred in the 200 block of Grafton Avenue at 11:50 p.m. Two women were robbed at gunpoint by a male and female after the victims exited their vehicle. The suspects took the victims’ cell phones and a wallet.
