Essex County authorities are looking for a suspect who shot a man dead on a street in Newark's South Ward Wednesday, February 16.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a ShotSpotter device activated and alerted police of about nine rounds of gunfire that erupted in the vicinity of Mapes Place and Shephard Avenue around 3:57 p.m
When officers arrived, they taped off the vicinity after finding multiple shell casings and Mr. James Shaw, 25, struggled to live after a gunman approached then fired at him.
Police say Shaw was rushed to University Hospital, where doctor’s attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. He transitioned a short time later.
Mr. Shaw was an organ donor, according to reports.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has taken the lead in the investigation, searching for the suspect and a motive for the deadly encounter.
No arrests have been made.
