Five Newark Carjacking Suspects Captured in Paterson After High-Speed Pursuit, Crash

Several individuals suffered non-fatal injuries and multiple cars were damaged in the aftermath of a pursuit that originated out of Essex County and ended in a crash in Paterson Sunday afternoon.

Newar Police officials said at approximately 12:20 p.m.,  police pursued a vehicle reported carjacked in a section of the city. 

According to police, the vehicle was initially observed at Hunterdon Avenue and Renner Avenue but sped through several parts of Newark in an attempt to evade officers.

Officials said  The NJ State Police joined the pursuit when the suspect sped their way onto The NJ Turnpike, reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour. The driver then wrecklessy barreled onto Route 80, heading towards Paterson. 

RLS Media was on the scene when the pursuit came to a crashing halt in the area of Madison Avenue and Broadway in Paterson.

Police arrested five suspects after a brief foot pursuit in the Passaic County neighborhood. Police say a handgun was recovered.

Although Newark Police said no injuries were initially reported, we observed about three conscious and alert individuals taken from the scene by EMS to St. Joseph's Hospital.

Just under a half dozen vehicles were smashed and damaged during the pursuit at the Paterson scene.

NJSP STATEMENT 9:10am: 

“At 1215pm, State Police received a “Be on the Lookout” from Newark Police Department for a vehicle that was carjacked in Newark.

Troopers located the vehicle traveling north on the New Jersey Turnpike. Troopers in marked cars used lights and sirens to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop.

The driver continued north onto I-80 west and took exit 58B to Madison Avenue in Paterson.

The driver continued toMadison Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard where the driver failed to stop at a red light and became disabled during a motor vehicle crash.

Minor injuries were reported in the crash.

Four suspects were arrested in the vehicle.

During the investigation, troopers located two 9mm handguns, a high capacity magazine, and hollow point ammunition.

A 15-year-old male, two 14-year-old males, and a 16-year-old male all of Newark, NJ were charged with 2 counts of possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, 2 counts of unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow point ammunition, possession of high capacity magazine, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, and eluding.

They were lodged at the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center.

This incident remains under investigation.
