The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating a fatal shooting in Newark's South Ward on Wednesday afternoon.
A ShotSpotter device activated and alerted police of about nine rounds of gunfire that erupted in the vicinity of Mapes Place and Shephard Avenue around 3:57 p.m.
Police arrived and found an unconscious and unresponsive male suffering bullet wounds at that location.
The victim was provided life-saving treatment on the scene before being rushed to University Hospital, where doctors' attempts to save his life were unsuccessful.
He died a short time later.
Police are trying to determine if a person transported to University Hospital around the same time, in a private vehicle, is also connected to the deadly shooting.
About five people were shot in Newark between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The suspects fled the scene and are at large.
