Police responded to the teens block of Pennsylvania RR Avenue on a report of a robbery last night at approximately 7:06 p.m., Captain James Sarnicki said.
Officers spoke to the victim, a 65-year-old Roselle man, who told them that as he was walking to his car after getting off the train he was followed by three individuals, said the captain.
As he approached his 2008 Buick Enclave, one of the men pointed a handgun at him and told him to hand over his wallet. The suspect also removed the victim’s cell phone from his pocket.
One of the other youths then told the victim to hand over his car keys.
Two of the suspects then entered his vehicle and drove off while the man with the gun walked back towards S. Wood Avenue, said Sarnicki.
After a search of the area failed to locate the gunman, the victim told the officers that he had OnStar in his vehicle, a GPS tracking system.
Dispatchers contacted OnStar and were told the car was in Elizabeth.
After the Elizabeth Police Department was alerted, the vehicle was located and recovered after a brief pursuit that ended in a crash.
Several suspects were taken into custody.
The victim later identified the 17-year-old Linden teen as the gunman.
He was charged with carjacking, robbery, and weapons offenses, and was later transferred to the Union County Juvenile Detention facility in Linden.
A 16-year-old Linden teen was also taken into custody on a juvenile warrant.
The investigation is continuing by both police departments.
The gun has not been recovered, added the captain.
The victim was unharmed, police said.
