New Jersey State Police officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances behind a pedestrian strike that injured a union County man Saturday night.
According to a statement released by Trooper Brandi Slota, at approximately 9:48 p.m., police responded to reports of a pedestrian struck on I-80 west at milepost 36.6.
Trooper Slota said a preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Michael Gachko, 49, of Summit, parked his vehicle on the shoulder of I-80 eastbound and entered the roadway where he crossed the eastbound lanes of travel on foot.
He then entered the westbound lanes.
In the area of milepost 36.6 on I-80 west, Trooper Slota said a Chevrolet pickup struck Gachko.
"As a result of the crash, Michael Gachko was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries," Trooper Slota said.
The investigation remains active.
