One Killed in Fatal Route 1 Crash in North Brunswick

North Brunswick Township

North Brunswick Police announced that they are investigating a fatal crash that occurred overnight.

According to police, at approximately 12:20 a.m., Patrol units were dispatched to the intersection of Route 1 and Adams Lane for a reported serious motor vehicle collision.

Police said that units located the scene near that intersection upon their arrival.

The collision involved multiple vehicles, both operated and parked, as well as a utility pole.

According to police, the driver of one of the vehicles, a tow truck, was ejected from that vehicle.

Police arrived and began life-saving measures, assisted by EMS shortly after.

Police said that the driver was later pronounced dead at the scene.

According to officials, the highway remained closed for several hours due to the investigation, as well as a large debris field.

The highway has been reopened, however one lane remains closed for utility pole repair and clean-up of some spilled fuel.

Preliminary investigation reveals Edward Smith Jr. of North Brunswick was driving a tow truck in the area of Adams Lane.

According to the investigation, he proceeded to make a left turn onto Route 1 north, where he was struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer.

The tow truck left the roadway and struck a vehicle that was parked on an auto dealership's property. The tractor and trailer came to rest in the shoulder area of the highway.

The following agencies responded to the scene: North Brunswick PD, FD and EMS, RWJUH Paramedics, Middlesex County Haz-Mat, NJDOT, George Logan Towing, and PSE&G. We thank all of them for the assistance they provide.

The incident is under investigation by the North Brunswick Police Traffic Bureau.
