Police officials in Newark announced that a second detective, Quadiryyah Marshall, was shot during the arrest of an armed suspect on Tuesday, December 14.
Officials say just after 8:35 p.m., Newark Police in the area of 14th Avenue and 14th Street, in response to community concerns.
The suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire as police approached, and Police Officer Nicholas Edert was shot.
After suffering a non-life-threatening injury, Edert was treated and released from University Hospital on Wednesday.
Upon his release, Mayor Baraka and Director O’Hara led hundreds of police officers, as well as state troopers and a host of Newark Firefighters and other well-wishers, in a tribute to Edert, Marshall, and the other police officers involved in this incident.
Mayor Baraka and Director O’Hara then promoted Edert to detective.
Yesterday, medical professionals discovered a bullet fragment in the leg of a second injured detective, Quadiryyah Marshall. She was released from University Hospital today.
A suspect is in custody and a gun has been recovered.
Federal gun charges have been approved by the US Attorney’s Office, as well as attempted murder and weapons charges by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
