Police in Newark are reporting five shooting arrests, including a 17-year-old male suspect from Newark in connection with an attempted carjacking and for firing at a retired Newark Police Officer, with six illegal guns recovered this week.
Officials said in a statement just before 3:45 p.m. on November 24, police responded to the 200 block of 14th Avenue on a ShotSpotter notification.
Upon arrival, Police located the victim, a retired Newark Police Captain, shot at by a male juvenile who attempted to carjack him.
The victim was sitting in his parked vehicle conducting his duties as a security officer when the suspect opened his vehicle’s door and demanded that he get out.
Police said the victim withdrew his firearm, causing the suspect to flee, heading west on 14th Avenue towards Ashland Street.
The victim chased the suspect, who then drew a weapon and fired towards him, striking a parked vehicle.
Detectives investigating this incident identified the juvenile suspect, who was arrested Thursday.
Police said he faces charges of carjacking, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, firearm possession for an illegal purpose and criminal mischief.
According to police, shooting suspects arrested include:
Mr. Christopher Rodriguez, 20, and Mr. Tommie Jordan, 18, both of Newark, were arrested on December 1, and charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a firearm for an illegal purpose, possession of a prohibited weapon (large-capacity magazine) and conspiracy.
The two suspects shot a victim who exited a NJ Transit bus in the 500 block of Elizabeth Avenue.
The victim was transported to University Hospital to treat a non-life-threatening injury and is reportedly in stable condition.
Police say, Mr. Ammaj Jones, 19, of Newark, was arrested on November 24, after he was identified as a suspect who robbed and shot a victim in the 100 block of 1st Street on November 18. Jones entered the back seat of the victim’s vehicle when a passenger exited.
After demanding the victim’s cash and property, the suspect shot the victim and fled the vehicle.
Police identified Jones, who was arrested after a search warrant was executed.
Police charged Jones with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, firearm possession for an illegal purpose and robbery.
Police said Mr. Khalil Palmer, 38, of Irvington, was arrested on November 23, in connection with a shooting on October 20. Police responded to the 200 block of South 20th Street following a ShotSpotter notification.
A female victim was shot at from a vehicle that followed her from Newark onto Routes 1 and 9.
The victim was not injured. Police identified Palmer as the suspect in this incident and he was arrested without incident.
Palmer faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, firearm possession for an illegal purpose and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.
Suspects arrested for weapon possession included: Mr. Dashawn Gibson, 31, of Somerville, and Mr. Desmond U. Edward, Jr., 34, of Newark. Both men were arrested on November 26 after police observed a loaded firearm inside a vehicle driven by Edward during a motor vehicle stop at Renner Avenue and Osborne Terrace.
Each faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon (hollow point ammunition and large-capacity magazine) and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.
Most recently, Edward was arrested on March 15, 2021, for domestic violence simple assault.
On December 2, 2021, after executing a search warrant, police arrested Mr. Zyair Anderson, 22, of Roselle.
Officers recovered a handgun loaded with hollow-point ammunition. Anderson faces federal weapons charges.
Most recently, Anderson was arrested in Paterson during the execution of a search warrant.
Following the execution of a search warrant, Mr. Rahman Ali Solomon, 20, of Newark, was arrested after police recovered a loaded weapon thrown from a window of a residence at Stratford Place.
Solomon faces charges of possession of a firearm while under the age of 21, possession of an extended magazine and violation of the regulatory provisions relating to firearms.
In a joint operation with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Raheem Bryant, 44, of Newark, was arrested on November 30, following the execution of a search warrant of a red Pontiac
Grand Am, where a handgun was recovered. He was previously arrested in 2018 for CDS possession, CDS distribution and distribution of CDS within 1,000 ft. of a school. Photo not available.
Police recovered two additional firearms, with investigations continuing to identify suspects connected to these weapons.
These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
