Officials in Newark reported that members of the Newark Fire Division extinguished a 2-alarm fire at 80 Court Street Monday.
According to Newark Fire Officials, shortly after 10 p.m., the Fire Division received a call of an apartment fire at a large, five-story multi-apartment dwelling located at 80 Court Street.
Officials said the initial responding fire companies located fire in the lower level floors with the fire beginning to quickly spread to upper floors.
When it was determined the fire was spreading through the walls, a second alarm was initiated sending more than seventy firefighters to rescue residents and contain the fire.
The occupants of the dwelling were evacuated from the interior of the building and a search and rescue was conducted by responding companies which yielded negative results for additional occupants.
Officials said the fire companies were able to neutralize the fire in the lower level floors and the fire was determined to be under control shortly after 11 p.m.
Two of the residents were treated for smoke inhalation and no other injuries have been reported.
Thirty-two adults and thirteen children residing in the dwelling were relocated.
The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by the Department of Public Safety’s Arson Unit.
