The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has taken the lead in a hit-and-run investigation that left a woman dead Thursday night in Newark.
According to county officials, at approximately 7:20 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of Market and Martin Luther King Boulevard to investigate reports of a person struck by a car.
Upon arrival, emergency responders found the severely injured woman lying on the ground at that location.
According to The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the unidentified woman was pronounced dead a short time later.
The vehicle that struck the woman sped from the scene and the driver is being sought by detectives this morning.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
