A high-speed pursuit that originated from Newark ended with a crash and a suspect being taken into custody on an Interstate in Orange Wednesday evening.
According to preliminary reports, an off-duty correctional police officer followed a blue Chrysler 300 on South Orange Avenue around 7:30 p.m.
The suspect was engaged in a carjacking and reportedly fired shots at the officer who said he interrupted the incident.
The suspect refused to stop and led police on a pursuit that ultimately raced across the westbound lanes of I-280.
Newark Police, who also joined the chase, closely followed the vehicle until it became disabled near exit 11. The suspect was taken into custody and EMS was called to the scene for a crash that injured a civilian inside their vehicle.
Police closed off the right lane of the highway for the cleanup and the investigation.
Authorities are continuing to investigate and preliminarily charged the suspect with eluding since no weapon was found.
Officials have not confirmed if the officer returned fire at the suspect.
There were no severe injuries reported.
