Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara reports the arrest of Carlos Green, 64, of Newark, for an incident of aggravated assault against police that occurred yesterday.
“I commend these officers who, like so many other of our officers do, courageously responded to a report of shots fired and placed their lives on the line for the safety of our community,” O’Hara said.
“The officers remained calm despite being fired upon and performed their duty with the utmost restraint and determination. And because of their professionalism, innocent people were evacuated from danger, the suspect was safely taken into custody, and no one was injured despite this dangerous situation.”
According to police officials, at approximately 11:45 a.m., Newark police responded to the 300 block of South 18th Street on a report of shots fired. An officer observed a suspect fire a handgun at other responding officers from a second-floor balcony area of a residence.
Officials said that the officers took up tactical positions and called for the Newark Police Division’s Emergency Response Team, which evacuated residents from the 1st and 3rd floors, deploying robots and pole cameras to ensure no other residents remained inside.
According to police officials, no injuries have been reported, and the suspect, Green, was apprehended without further incident.
Police recovered two firearms after receiving a search warrant for Green’s apartment.
According to officials, he faces charges of aggravated assault against police, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and hindering apprehension.
