New Brunswick Man Charged with Attempted Murder

Middlesex County and New Brunswick Police Department officials announced today that a New Brunswick man has been arrested and charged in connection with a non-fatal stabbing.

Authorities say, on September 26, at approximately 11:50 p.m., authorities responded to the area of French Street between Harvey Street and Prospect Street following the report of a stabbing.

Upon their arrival, officers located a male who had sustained multiple stab wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

According to authorities, an investigation by Detective William Coleman of the New Brunswick Police Department and Detective Ryan Tighe of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined Santos Montoya, 29, of New Brunswick stabbed the victim with a knife that was recovered at the scene.

Today, officials say, Montoya was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree attempted murder, one count of second-degree aggravated assault, and one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Montoya is detained pending a pre-trial detention hearing in Superior Court.

According to officials, at present, the stabbing does not appear to be a random act. The investigation is active and continuing.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Montoya are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
