Essex County officials announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating the fatal shooting of Mr. Michael Rutledge, 34, of Newark.
According to authorities, on Monday, Aug. 23, just before 9 p.m. Newark Police officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Spruce Street and Martin Luther King Blvd.
Officials say police discovered Rutledge lying on the sidewalk suffering multiple bullet wounds.
Medical personnel pronounced Rutledge dead at the scene at 9:27 p.m.
