Police officials in Newark are investigating a shooting spree that gripped parts of the city overnight. It caused injuries to about six victims since Sunday evening.
In the latest in out-of-control shootings in several sections of the city, just before 3:40 a.m., Monday, a shooter recklessly sprayed multiple rounds inside a building in the 200 block of Wainwright Street. This prompted police to the scene for the investigation.
Officers arrived and found shell casings and a male victim struck multiple times by bullets.
He was rushed to University Hospital with a police escort, where doctors treated his wounds then listed him in life-threatening condition.
At around the same time, police canvassed the areas of Lyons Avenue and Parkview and Bergen Street and Pomona Avenue after a hospital walk-in shooting victim reported being fired upon by an armed male in that South Ward community.
The victim was struck in the shoulder by bullets and is expected to recover. As of 4:40 a.m., police had not recovered a crime scene.
Officials said they are also looking into a shooting that occurred on Springfield Avenue before 2 a.m.
In this incident, Rutgers Univerity Police notified Newark officials that a male gunshot victim arrived at University Hospital in a private vehicle.
According to reports, the victim reported that a gunman approached and began firing rounds in his direction near 14th Street and Springfield Avenue.
Police closed off Springfield Avenue between the 400 and 500 block to search for a crime scene. The victim is reportedly in stable condition.
In another shooting incident, at approximately 6:25 p.m., Sunday gunfire rang out in the area of 898 South 17th Street. When police arrived, officers found a seriously injured male suffering a gunshot wound in his back.
Police said the victim was rushed to University Hospital for treatment while detectives searched the area for a crime scene.
At approximately 6 p.m., officials at Beth Israel Hospital notified police that a male gunshot victim entered the emergency room. Police began searching for a crime scene near 119 Schley Street, where officers found a loaded gun at that location.
Authorities believe that the victim was shot at this location, but an investigation is active and ongoing.
According to police, gunfire rang out in the area of 185 South 9th Street around 5:17 p.m., rushing units to the scene to investigate. Upon arrival, police found a male victim suffering bullet wounds in both legs at that location.
While police searched the area for additional victims, cops found about three cars struck and damaged by stray bullets.
The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is in serious but stable condition. The suspect fled the scene and is at large.
There were no arrests reported in any of the shooting incidents at this time.
