18-Year-Old Arrested for Assaulting, Attempting to Disarm Linden Officer

Linden

An 18-year-old man was arrested Thursday afternoon after he swung at a police officer and made an attempt to disarm the Linden officer, police said today.

Police responded to a report of a man jumping on cars and acting disorderly on Chandler Avenue Thursday afternoon, Captain James Sarnicki said.

Upon arrival, responding officers observed the man, later identified as Ricky R. Gass, 18, of Linden, standing in the street. When Gass saw the officers, he ran into a house on the 400 block of Chandler Avenue, added Sarnicki.   Officers knocked on the door and Gass came out wrapped in a blanket yelling at the officers to shoot him. He continued to act belligerent and swung his at one of the officers, striking the officer on the shoulder. Gass then grabbed the officer’s holstered weapon in an attempt to disarm him. After a brief struggle, the two officers were able to subdue and handcuff Gass.   He was transported to Trinitas Hospital for an evaluation and subsequently released into the custody of the police.   Gass was charged with aggravated assault on an officer, attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest.

He was taken to the Union County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail with a court date set for February 13th.
