Kearny Police Chief George King said the Kearny Police Department Traffic Bureau and the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal bicyclist crash that occurred on U.S. Route 1&9 (Truck) on Monday.
Chief King said Kearny Officers responded to Truck route 1&9 near Central Avenue at approximately 2:29 a.m. after receiving a report of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle.
According to Chief King, a preliminary investigation indicated that an adult man was riding a bicycle in the highway's left lane when he was struck by a Nissan Pathfinder being driven in the same direction by a 40-year-old Jersey City woman.
The bicyclist was then struck by one additional vehicle, a Mercedes Benz SUV, that was also being driven in the southbound lanes of Truck Route 1&9.
The driver of the Mercedes was a 32-year-old Carteret man, Chief King said.
The unidentified bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Jersey City Medical Center.
As of this writing, no criminal or traffic-related charges are expected to issue against either driver involved in the crash.
The bicyclist was described as an adult black male attired in a sleeveless black t-shirt, black shorts, and white sneakers who rode a blue CitiBike.
If any members of the public witnessed the crash or can provide information to help in identifying the cyclist, they are asked to submit an email tip to tips@kearnynjpd.org, or to contact Officer Rich Pawlowski via telephone at (201) 998-1313 ext. 2817.
