Police took a Passaic County woman into custody and charged her with attempted murder and burglary after she allegedly broke into a home on a quiet street in West Caldwell then stabbed the owner Monday.
RLS Media learned that the early morning violent encounter happened around 7:30 a.m. on Gray Street, where a 911 caller reported a woman banging on her front door and attempting to force entry into the home.
According to West Caldwell Police, the caller described the suspect as a female who frequented a home on Gray Street and added that the woman was armed with two knives.
Police say the caller also reported that the actor was last seen running across the street and gained entry to another neighboring home.
West Caldwell Police Officers responded to the area and said they immediately heard screaming coming from the interior of the residence.
Police say while approaching the front door, officers made contact with the alleged perpetrator, identified as Ms. Laila M. Alayat, 43, of Paterson.
According to West Caldwell Police, officers said they observed Alayat armed with two knives and an 80-year-old victim bleeding in the living room.
The senior victim received deep wounds to both hands and a laceration to her chest West Caldwell Police said.
According to police, units on the scene were able to disarm Alayat without further incident.
After checking all of Gray Street and surrounding homes, police confirmed that there were no further victims.
Alayat was transported to an area hospital for an evaluation and the elderly victim was rushed to a Level I Regional Trauma Center for further treatment and listed in non-life-threatening condition.
Police charged Alayat on a Complaint-Warrant with Attempted Murder, Burglary and Weapons Offenses.
