Police in Hillside are looking for a suspect wanted for stealing a vehicle left unattended at a location in the Township Monday.
According to police officials, the victim exited his vehicle to open a gate at a home on Compton Terrace when an unidentified male jumped into the car and sped away from the scene.
The victim's wife made an urgent request for information on social media, asking the community to be on the lookout for suspects who committed a carjacking and stole the couples 2019 Mercedes with NJ license plate numbers "J16-MWM".
Hillside Police said the incident was not a carjacking but rather an easily preventable theft. The vehicle was recovered at an undisclosed location this morning in Newark.
Police in Township remind residents to please ensure that they do not leave their cars running with the keys or key fobs inside vehicles.
When parked, Hillside Police said, please remove any valuables from vehicles when they are unattended and lock your cars, especially when leaving them overnight, even at your residence.
Do not become an easy target for thieves by leaving your vehicle unattended and running.
