Residents in the vicinity of 34 Clinton Place have been evacuated from their homes after an early morning shots-fired incident turned into a barricaded suspect in that section of Newark's South Ward.
According to preliminary reports, police responded to reports of shots fired at approximately 5:55 a.m., prompting a police response.
When officers arrived, they found shell casings and a male suspect who reportedly retreated into a home and refused to come out. Police are taking cover at the scene of this dangerous situation.
Officers assisted residents from home around the scene while police created a perimeter until Newark Emergency Services Unit's and SWAT’s arrival.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is involved in this investigation.
There are no injuries immediately reported and police have not said if the suspect has hostages.
